SUMMARY:WLGC: Africa -Land of the next billion users - challenges and opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities which impact the localization industry in Africa.\n\n\nAfrica is known for its vibrant colors and diversity – this aspect is true even in the case of the translation and localization industry. With the NBU coming from Africa and because of internet access\, Africa is opening up to business and with that creating opportunities in the language industry. W.L. GC brings an “information packed” session which demystifies Africa and focuses on the L10N industry\, women education and empowerment\, the community and their challenges and how culture plays a crucial role in their success. Join us as we chat with strong and driven speakers who will take us through a journey of Africa. \n \n📅 Date: 19 OCT 2023 \n⏰ Time: 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM\, Pacific time \n🔗 Location: Online \n \nType of event: Panel discussion \nGuest: Ursuline\, Rahel\, Habiba Garba \nAgenda \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntro of Women in Localization & Global Community\nIntroduction to the topic and the speaker\nPanel Discussion\nQ&A\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be hosted and moderated by the Events and Content team within Global Community of Women in Localization. \nUrsuline\, TWB community member: \nMy name is URSULINE NYANDINDI. I am from Tanzania and currently live in Dar es Salaam. I have a medical background and my main fields are dentistry\, public health\, health promotion\, and school health. I have worked mainly in my home country\, and my previous duties included writing different documents but sometimes translating them from English into Swahili language and vice versa. I have also been volunteering as a translator with Translators without Borders (TWB)/CLEAR GLOBAL for about 5 years until now. I believe that the TWB Partners (mainly humanitarian and development organizations) for whom I have translated their documents have found my work useful for reducing language barriers between them and their clients. A challenge I sometimes face is the lack or slow development of Swahili terminologies for new issues for example during the COVID pandemic. On a positive note\, the availability of online translation works and programs has rendered translation easier and more enjoyable. Working as a translator I feel I have been useful to my own country and beyond borders. \nRahel\, TWB community member: \nRahel Hadera is a Tigrinya Interpreter and translates passionately to break the language barrier for refuge and hard source language. She has been working for the last four years\, volunteering and donating 170k words to Translators without Border (TWB)\, AterAction\, International Rescue Center\, Tarjimly\, and other NGOs and partners on translation\, transcript\, subtitle\, and voice recording. In 2021\, she took an online course Humanitarian Translation for the TWB Community. And she has accrued 40 hours of training in Medical interpreting from MasterWord. She was awarded two appreciated certificates for translating and subtitling. \nRahel graduated with her diploma in 2017 in counseling psychology from East Africa Baraton University after working for one year in a Rehabilitation center for substance abuse and alcohol. After that\, she continued her education with a counseling psychology bachelor’s degree from Africa International University and graduated in 2020 and worked as a school counselor for one year. In 2021\, she started working as a certified medical interpreter with Future Group Translation Service for one year. Rahel works as a medical and humanitarian Interpreter on Center-Tel BPO and as a CCT Linguist. \nHabiba Garba\, Localization and Civil Society Strengthening Assistant at CLEAR Global: \nHabiba has over 9 years of experience working in the Localization field. She has worked as Community Engagement Officer\, IT Officer\, Reporter\, newscaster\, Translator\, Scriptwriter\, Transcriber\, Lecturer\, and Teacher. She is an amazing team player\, a hard worker\, and an excellent communicator. \nShe translated and transcribed thousands of words from Kanuri to English and vice versa. One of the best memories from her career was working on a chatbot that provides vital information to locals in the languages of the area where she lives and works. She can’t wait to work on another chatbot soon! Right now\, she is working on a localization project. \nHajja Abdu\, Project Assistant\, Women Participation Project focal \nInternational Organization for Migration (UN Migration Agency) \nHajja is from the Mafa Local Government Area in Borno State\, Nigeria. She holds a professional master’s degree in Disaster Risk Management from the University of Maiduguri and has been working as a project assistant under the CCCM unit at IOM\, Nigeria Mission for the past six years. Her primary role entails handling women’s participation projects\, which involves reaching out to women in different LGA in Borno state. In this capacity\, she conducts training sessions for women leaders on their roles and responsibilities\, building and boosting their confidence through enrollment in informal education\, to contribute meaningfully in household and camp decision-making\, and creating awareness on the benefits of having women and girls\, including those with disabilities\, in camp life and governance structures to promote gender equality. \n🔴 This live event will be hosted on Zoom and it will be recorded. It’s free to attend but you have to register through Eventbrite so we can email you the Zoom login details. \nThe event is open to everyone but the recording will only be available to Women in Localization members. \n \n📢📢📢 Not a member yet?
