WLGC: Unconscious Bias and its Effect on Women in the Workplace

Unconscious bias is something everyone has, whether we realize it or not. Why do I think all scientists are men? Why do I associate a nurse with being a woman? These are questions you might not ask yourself but should.
Our guest speaker Hilarie Bass from the Bass Institute will explain what unconscious bias is, as well as how to recognize bias and strategies for overcoming it. The presentation will end with a Q&A, so make sure to have questions ready!

Hilarie Bass: Hilarie founded the Bass Institute for Diversity and Inclusion as she proactively researched why women leave companies before they reach senior management. An attorney and former American Bar Association president, Hilarie has more than 20 years in senior management, including six as co-president of 2,000-person law firm Greenberg Traurig and eight as head of the firm’s 600-attorney litigation practice. During her illustrious 38-year career in litigation, Hilarie worked on landmark legal cases, including widely recognized pro bono work on behalf of two foster children that led to the elimination of the state of Florida’s 20-year-old ban on gay adoption. Hilarie is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, an invitation-only organization that includes only the top 1% of lawyers. She is also the current Chair-Elect for University of Miami’s Board of Trustees. She was also consistently ranked among the top US lawyers by Chambers USA Guide, The Best Lawyers in America, Lawdragon 500, Legal 500 United States, Florida Trend magazine’s “Legal Elite,” Super Lawyers and many others.
