*Huh, what’s a borrel? – If you’re confused then you aren’t Dutch nor living in the Netherlands! A borrel is the ultimate informal social gathering in the Netherlands and a staple of Dutch culture. It mostly involves drinks and snacks at a bar and takes place before dinner. Cafés often serve a borrelplank – a selection of cheese served with mustard, sausage slices, and bitterballen.
