Women in Localization’s BookBuzz Events: Educating and Inspiring the Community

BlogPersonal & Professional Wisdom

Have you heard the buzz about Women in Localization’s BookBuzz?

BookBuzz is a series of educational events that examine topics that are top of mind in the localization industry. Authors discuss their book with a W.L. host, as well as other topics relevant to our industry, including globalization, localization, user experience, and translation. In the future, BookBuzz will expand to include topics beyond localization, including female leadership, effective stress management, and more.

Since it began more than a year ago, BookBuzz has featured eight localization authors who have shared thoughts and ideas from their books in illuminating one-hour conversations. With so many creative minds in the localization industry, it is no wonder that a localization BookBuzz featuring industry authors was just waiting to be born.

The idea for an industry book series started during a conversation in March 2023 between two Women in Localization volunteers and Mentorship and Education managers from W.L.’s Netherlands and India chapters, Nadja Ruhl and Pooja Agrawal. Mentorship and Education Manager Cristina Grigoriu from W.L.’s Romanian chapter immediately supported the idea, and this cross-chapter initiative quickly moved to the global level.

All BookBuzz events are organized by Women in Localization’s Global Community and are free for members to join.

“A goal of BookBuzz is to enhance our audience’s knowledge and skills in research, sales, management, and other areas that will help them in their career advancement, networking, and personal growth,” says BookBuzz host and W.L. Mentorship and Education Manager Nadja Ruhl. “When possible, we provide event participants with a discount for the discussed book and encourage them to contact the authors directly if they have any follow-up questions.”

The BookBuzz team collected an inspiring line-up of authors in 2023 and 2024, such as:

  • Author Sören Eberhardt talked with BookBuzz host Pooja Agrawal about “The Little Book of Localization”, a concise guide that provides an introduction to the principles and practices of localization (watch the interview here).
  • Author Carmen Cisneros shared insights on vendor management and discussed her book “Take the Plunge” with host Cristina Grigoroiu (watch the interview here).

  • Author Kristin Gutierrez talked with host Nadja Ruhl and offered an exercise from her book “Be a Better Sales Leader” (watch the interview here).
  • Authors Claudia Francesca Mueller and Sarah Sandführ met with host Nadja Ruhl to talk about what it actually means to write a book on Localization and their experience working on “Why UX and Localization go together” (watch the interview here).
